I can only take a guess at the meaning of Benedict's quote.
The best way I can see to understand "necessity" so that it is in contrast to self-will, and I would assume it then means submission to the will of God, is as "doing that which is necessary as determined by God."
Okay, that's a mouthful to interpret one word, but then I see the quote as "doing what I want brings punishment, but doing what God says is necessary reaps a reward." There is a necessity that is laid on us all.
